The name “Casuzze I Mori Museum” comes from the union of two elements deeply rooted in the history of the area: the ancient rural casuzze made of white stone and the reference to the Moors, that is, the Arab presence in Sicily between the 9th and 11th centuries.

The "Moors": Arab traces in the territory
The term "Moors" recalls the significant Arab influence on the island. During their rule, Sicily became an advanced center of agriculture, water engineering, and culture.
According to popular tradition, many areas of the Pachino hinterland and the Hyblaean territory preserve stories, legends, and material traces linked to this period.
A farmhouse overlooking the coast
The position of the casuzze has always been particularly strategic: located between the sea and the hills, they overlook the entire coast stretching from Pachino to Marzamemi. A view that, for centuries, has offered control and protection over the territory.
At dawn on July 10, 1943, that little triangle of limestone between Cozze and Triona turned into a true historical stage. After the Allied landings at Capo Passero and Marza, its elevated position, facing the blue of the Ionian Sea, became an essential point of reference.
Here, soldiers of the First Infantry, the 51st Highland Division, and the Argylls gathered, seeking shelter, coordination, and a safe place from which to observe movements along the coast. The small Casuzze, once a simple rural farmhouse, thus became the hub of an English command, thanks to their privileged view and the shape of the terrain.
The atmosphere was thick with tension and determination: men, vehicles, and materials — including machinery and ammunition too heavy to be carried by mules — accumulated at that spot, making the area a fundamental operational center for Allied operations.
