In Pachino, between legend and history, "Casuzze – I Mori Museum" is born
PACHINO – Sicily and its magical places that exude history, tradition, and culture magically come back to life through the historical memory of our territories and the socio-cultural project of Peppe and Sandra, who, at the suggestion of their sons Corrado and Paolo, have given new life to the old farmhouse of their parents.
“In two and a half years we have put together the pieces of a puzzle – explains Peppe Schembri – and the historical and cultural project ‘Casuzze – I Mori Museum’ was born, which since its opening has revived the cultural interest of the entire territory, bringing back those flavors and colors that are now being lost“.
“Casuzze-I Mori Museum” tells the story of the territory of Pachino and the province of Siracusa. Just 2 km from the village of Marzamemi, located on a magical hilltop from which you can see the entire Val di Noto, the history of this place is tied to its ancient and familiar atmosphere. During the Anglo-American landing, it was requisitioned and became an outpost defending the area, as can be seen in the landing maps.
Going even further back in time – as explained by the hosts Peppe and Sandra – the first historical evidence is linked to the Starrabba, founders of Pachino, and to the factotum of the Marquis Di Rudinì, uniting the place indissolubly to the production of wheat but above all of wine, where in the welcoming farmhouse work tools over 300 years old have been found, passed down from generation to generation, including the discovery of wooden plows and iron tools.
“We have dedicated a wing of the structure – continues Schembri – the room of the old chicken coop, still in sandstone, where, over a glass of our own wine and some ‘pane cunzato’, the story of our origins is told among legends and historical references, such as that of the Calafarina cave with its Arab influences, which magically come back to life through the ancient memory of our places“.
The tourist who immerses themselves in this place, where they can spend days in complete and absolute relaxation among the welcoming rooms of the structure cared for by Mrs. Sandra, is transported to another time dimension with the opportunity to learn about the origins of an area sometimes not fully appreciated by those who should.
“The name is not accidental – concludes Peppe Schembri – because it is linked to the stories of my father, honoring the memory of our ancestors in order to make known the immense cultural heritage of our land, because only by honoring our origins and our past can we build the future“.
